29 August 2025
As a part of our community engagement initiative, the Koraga Community members were invited to the Centre for Ethics, Yenepoya (deemed to be University) on 29 August 2025. The meeting was held as a follow-up to previous community engagement initiatives, with the aim of directing future efforts to support the Koraga community based on their needs, preferences, and convenience.
To address employment concerns, a conference or seminar was proposed to promote job readiness and create employment opportunities. Representatives from major companies could be invited to explore potential employment avenues for the community. In the meantime, skill training programs to be offered to graduates to enhance their employing opportunities. To raise awareness and promote pride in the Koraga heritage, a value-added course focused on the community could be introduced in Centre for Ethics.
The idea of training health volunteers from within the Koraga community was emphasized to ensure cultural sensitivity and build trust, allowing community members to share their struggles more openly. To start mental health initiatives such as counselling services and the establishment of mental health helplines. A medical camp approach was also suggested in collaboration with Yenepoya Medical College to address immediate health needs within the community.

Career Counseling Series for Health Care Professionals and Researchers: Session 7- One Health Ethics on 30 June 2025
Dr. Donal O’Mathuna, Professor, College of Nursing, Ohio State University, defined “One Health” as an integrated unified approach that aims to sustainably balance and optimize the health of people, animal and ecosystem. One health recognizes the health of human, domestic and wild animals, plants and the wider environment including ecosystem which are closely linked and interdependent. One Health paradigm aims to look at broader issues such as urbanization, climate change, conflicts, migration, breaches in public health measures, antimicrobial resistance in human and livestock, emerging and re-emerging diseases.
There is lack of coherent and robust ethical theories to address these problems and thus one health requires addressing all three dimensions of human ethics, animal ethics and environmental ethics in-order to promote best health, and provide a framework for meaningful research. The program was conducted in hybrid mode and supported by NIH (Grant no. 1R25TW010305).

Session 4- Climate Change and Health
Dr. Jeanette H. Magnus (Head, Centre for Global Health, Deputy, Sustainable Health Unit, University of Oslo, Norway), underlined the skyrocketing interest gained in climate change and health in just 14 years and the association of heat exposure increasing the likelihood of adverse pregnancy outcomes. Global data strongly confirming that heat wave now is the major threat to maternal and child outcome across the globe. Heat can impact the maternal child dyad as well as everything around it in a challenging way. To address these challenges a global movement is needed similar to Planetary health alliances which brings people from different disciplines to work on the challenges and focus on key findings.
Our second resource person Dr. Zanele Furusa (Lecturer and Environmental advocate California State University Dominguez Hills, USA, emphasized through her talk that climate change poses multiple threats to community health let alone personal and home health. The Community of Parties, the World Health Organization and many other localized and regional organizations have made massive strides to study and unpack the health-climate interface. A greater focus of research has prioritized climate change impacts to humans, animals and general ecosystem health. Equally important, and of high priority, is the sustenance of community health. Her presentation examined some of the ways in which a changing climate can affect community health and suggested workable solutions which can be contextualized for maximum benefits by any community.

Session 3- The curriculum vitae of ethics
Francis P. Crawley, (Executive Director of the Good Clinical Practice Alliance – Europe (GCPA) and the Strategic Initiative for Developing Capacity in Ethical Review (SIDCER) located in Leuven, Belgium), as resource person for the webinar examined the curriculum vitae of ethics as both a discipline and a vocation in contemporary society which delves into the dual identity of the ethics: a professional committed to rigorous research and reflection, and an individual embarking on a profound journey of conscience and soul. He highlighted ethics as a field historically rooted in the interplay of religion, science, technology, politics, and society. Yet, ethics transcends academia, shaping – and being shaped by – every sphere of human interaction. Through his lens, participants gained insight into ethics as a vocation that not only informs their actions but defines their essence, equipping them to navigate ethical complexities in healthcare and research with resilience and purpose.

Community Engagement Program-Track 1: Transgender community, 9 October 2021
Gender is an element of the society or can better be expressed as an important social construct. However, it is historically evident that in all socio-economic/political societies there has been discrimination/violence/inequality based on gender. Females, children, and many other vulnerable groups which include transgender people are mostly the victims of gender based violence. It is very crucial and relevant for us to understand their problems and needs (from their point of view), which will hopefully enable us to do something constructive to improve the quality of life of the transgender population. As a part of our community engagement initiative, the Transgender Community was invited to the Centre for Ethics, Yenepoya (deemed to be University) on 9 October 2021. The objective of this program was to understand their perception of health care services and their needs.

Art for charity: Student activity
THE ASHRAYA ART FOR CHARITY EVENT
The Ashraya Charitable Trust was founded by the YU batch of 2007 to raise funds for patients in Yenepoya Medical College Hospital who cannot afford to pay for their medications. The Ashraya Art for Charity Event is organised traditionally by the second year students of YU, this year the batch of 2013 was fortunate to host this benevolent event.
The Centre for Ethics showed a lot of enthusiasm in this year's event. A stall was put up for selling exclusive CFE merchandise that included interesting varieties of printed T shirts, badges, fridge magnets, note books, cups and book marks.
They all carried interesting messages and quotes which collaborated with taste and design of the past and present generation. The products were met with massive approval and praise from those who were attending, amounting to a hefty sum that came from the sale, that contributed to the total collection of the event. In all, it was quite an experience for those of us that participated in the functioning of the stall and we look forward for such opportunities in the future.

Breaking away from tradition - saving the environment: The Centre for Ethics, Yenepoya University does not follow the Indian tradition of presenting a bouquet of flowers to any guest during the inaugural ceremony or at any other times. Instead the guest is encouraged to plant a tree in our vibrant, verdant campus, with a guarantee that it will be nourished and nurtured with utmost care. In this way the Centre helps Yenepoya University give back more to the environment than has been taken. It also serves as an incentive for the guest to want to return to the campus to see his/her sapling.
