About us
There is a huge gap in ethics education. Technology has advanced rapidly, but ethics teaching is not meeting the demands. In its document ‘Vision 2015’ the Medical Council of India makes a strong case for enhancing medical ethics teaching. It is a very good decision, but the practical problem in implementing this is that there are very few qualified bioethicist who will be able to draft a curriculum and carry out the teaching-training responsibilities. The need of the hour is to train more medical educators in bioethics, in a global perspective with relevant local context.
In 2007-08 Dr. Vina Vaswani, Professor & Head, Department of Forensic Medicine & Toxicology, was permitted by the Yenepoya Medical College Management to pursue Masters in Bioethics as an Erasmus Mundus student (an initiative from European Union). In 2010 a proposal was mooted by Department of Forensic Medicine to host the centre for Ethics to establish ethics courses.
Upon her return, the newly established Yenepoya University, took the bold innovative initiative to create a Centre for Ethics with Dr. Vina Vaswani as the Director.
