The Centre for Ethics (CFE) at Yenepoya University, Mangalore was established in February 2011.  Dr. Vina Vaswani, Professor & Head, Department of Forensic Medicine & Toxicology, who had completed her Master's in Bioethics in 2008, as an Erasmus Mundus student, was appointed Director.  It was the first ethics-dedicated centre in a medical college in India.  The Centre was set up to bring about a reawakening of medical ethics and bioethics in the health care setting, through academic programs, research and cultural exchanges.  CFE offers two postgraduate diploma courses - one in Bioethics/Medical (PGDBEME) and the other in Clinical Ethics (PGDCE), along with other short courses and student activities in various sub-disciplines of bioethics.  
Yenepoya University is the first deemed university in the district of Dakshina Kannada (Mangalore) in the south of Karnataka.  The Islamic Academy of Education was established in 1991 as an educational trust.  The trust proposed the formation of a deemed university in 2008 and the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India recognized Yenepoya University on 27 February 2008.  Yenepoya Medical College, Dental College, Nursing College and Physiotherapy College are constituent colleges of Yenepoya University.

  • May 2016: Annual Workshop - Intensive Summer Workshop on Ethics and Research (I-SWEAR) has been awarded with 18 credit hours by the Karnataka Dental Council and 6 credit hours by Karnataka Medical Council. Read more... 
  • April 2016: The Centre for Ethics @ Yenepoya University conducted a one-day workshop on bioethics for undergraduate students at the national level conference DeMedCon 2016 at Sri Devaraj Urs Medical College, Kolar on 19 April 2016.  Click here to read more.
  • March 2016: Visibility program on five years of collaboration between Yenepoya University and  Johannes Gutenberg University, Mainz, Germany on 19th March 2016
  • February 2016: Fourth Encircle Meeting was held on 18th Feb, 2016. The topics discussed were 'Designer babies' and 'investigations and diagnosis of an epidemic'.
  • January 2016: Sixth batch of PG Diploma in Bioethics and Medical Ethics (PGDBEME) commenced 
  • January 2016: Third batch of PG Diploma in Clinical Ethics (PGDCE) commenced. 
  • December 2015: Third meeting of Encircle was held on 29th December. The topic discussed was 'Live demonstration of surgical procedures'. 
  • December 2015: Forum for Ethics Review Committees for the Asian and Western Pacific Regions (FERCAP) with the cooperation of the Forum for Ethics Review Committees of India (FERCI) conducted a four-day SIDCER Recognition Survey for Yenepoya University Ethics Committee from 6-9 December 2015.  The Survey team consisting of 4 members Dr Cristina Torres (FERCAP Coordinator), Dr. Chandanie Wanigatunge (FERCAP Lead Surveyor), Dr. Vasantha Muthuswamy (President FERCI) and Dr. Sangeeta Desai (Local Surveyor) assessed the functioning of the YEUC, its Secretariat, documentation and archiving and ethical review processes.  
  • July 2015: The Centre for Ethics conducted a training workshop for the members of the Ethics Committee of SDM Dental College at Dharwad, Karnataka on 6th and 7th July, 2015 (Details and photographs in the Academic section).
  • May 2015: The Intensive Summer Workshop in Ethics and Research (I-SWEAR) was held  at the Centre for Ethics, Yenepoya University from 11th to 15th May 2015. 27 participants registered for the workshop.
  • April 2015: Ethics Day celebration with student activities (debates, case studies and collage competitions on ethical issues) and a guest lecture by Rev. Fr. Leocir Passini .... Read more on the News and Events page
  • 20th to 24th December 2014: Professor Bebe Loff from Monash  University visited the Center and delivered a Special Lecture on Mitigating patient dissatisfaction. 
  • 13 February 2014: The inaugural edition of the Centre for Ethics Alumni Day was celebrated.  Dr. Bert Gordijn, Director, Centre for Ethics, Dublin City University, Ireland was the chief guest.  He delivered a lecture to the alumni on 'Human Enhancement and Moral Improvement' (to read the abstract click here).  This was followed by Dr. Bert's address to Yenepoya University at the Special Lecture Series on 'Disaster Ethics (to read the abstract click here).
  • ​12 September 2013: The Centre for Ethics, in collaboration with the departments of Internal Medicine and Community Medicine, Yenepoya Medical College, organized an innovative half-day Continuing Medical Education (CME) program “Pubic Health Ethics in India - Issues and Challenges”.  Professor (Dr.) Angus Dawson, who heads the Medicine, Ethics, Society and History Department at the Birmingham University, U.K. and Prof Dr. Amar Jesani, Founder Editor of the Indian Journal of Medical Ethics and Visiting Professor at the Centre for Ethics, were the resource persons. 250 participants registered for the CME.
